Oasis Navigators Central Park Custody Suite Update

News

On July 1st, GMP Central Park Custody Suite launched a new pilot program designed to fill a critical gap in support for young people at risk of violence, whether as victims or perpetrators.

This program introduces 2.5 full time Oasis Navigators to work directly with young people in police custody. This initiative aims to provide tailored, timely support and improve outcomes for this vulnerable group.

What do the Navigators do?

Navigators play an important role in bridging the gap between young people in custody and the services they need. They:

  • Review referral processes to ensure young people are connected to appropriate support.

  • Offer guidance and assistance either on-site at the custody facility or in the community post-release.

  • Contribute to the improvement of processes for young people attending interviews and other legal procedures.

Within just the first two months of the pilot, the program has already made a significant impact, with 31 young people referred for support.

An independent evaluation is being conducted by the Manchester Centre for Youth Studies.

A Step Towards Change

The Navigators in Custody pilot represents a proactive approach to breaking the cycle of violence and vulnerability for young people in custody. By offering immediate support and creating pathways to long-term services, it helps address underlying issues and reduce the risk of reoffending or further harm.

As the program progresses, we’re optimistic about its potential to create lasting, positive change for young people and the wider community.
